Barbatus tells Z to not take orders his whole life and to think for himself. When Z picks him up, he tells Barbatus to hang on because he will find his body.
He then finds Barbatus decapitated and laying nearby still alive and Barbatus asks him to help him up. Later on, after the battle is over, Z comes out and finds both the soldier ants and termites dead, with him being the sole survivor of the battle. Barbatus then hops on another termite's back and fights it with his hammer, after he gave Z his spear. During the Termite Battle, one of the Termites tries to eat Z, but Barbatus stabs it and saves Z's life. On their way to the battlefield, Barbatus answers questions Z has on their mission, and also explains to the younger ant how they plan on winning the battle, which is to overwhelm the enemy's defenses and kill their Queen. When General Mandible orders the troops to go into battle against the Termites, Z tells Barbatus that he came to hear the speech, but Barbatus tells Z that he'll watch out for him. When Z joins the soldier ants for the royal inspections, he meets Barbatus, who quickly takes a liking towards the younger ant and decides to take Z under his wings through the march to the termite colony. They are part of a suicide mission with the goal of eliminating a rivaling colony of termites.

Not much information is revealed on Barbatus' past, but it is revealed that he has been a soldier ant for a very long time. Barbatus is a soldier ant and one of the minor protagonists in Antz.
